The project "Support to the training of the Local System of Comprehensive Protection of Rights" (Apoyo a la estructuración del Sistema Local de Protecciòn Integral de Derechos), wants to contribute actively to the elimination of violence against children such as promoted at point 2 of UNICEF working plan 2010-2011.
During the planning of the intervention some key points highlighted by UNICEF’s global study on violence against children were taken into account, for example: giving priority to the prevention of violence, promotion of the participation of children, increasing the training of all those who work with and for the infancy and creating a reporting system accessible and appropriate for children.
The project is promoted in the municipalities of Matagalpa, San Juan del Sur and, in particular, Granada.
Duration: July 2011 - July 2012
Context
In Nicaragua persists an economic and social structure characterized by huge inequalities, despite efforts made in recent years in the field of economic growth and poverty reduction. According to a study on the quality of life realized in 2005, 46.2% of the population lives in poverty, of this 15% in extreme poverty.
The largest age group in the country is represented by individuals under the age of 18 (53%) and 59% of families with children are forced to live in places without adequate material conditions.
Some studies on the condition of the young and adolescent population have highlighted also a high degree of violence against minors. Among the most common forms of violence in the country, domestic violence and sexual abuse are the most frequent cases. About 54% of children declared to have been subjected to family abuse and as much as 14% having experienced at least one sexual violence.
